More Random Friday Thoughts

Here are some random thoughts from this week:

I love the honesty and real talk that takes place in our community group each week!  As we talked about City Church Tallahassee Vision, Mission and Values this week, one statement stood out more than any other from one of our group members.  As we talked about reaching our community, he said (paraphrase) “Look at the text messages on your phone.  How many of them are from/to people who are not Christ Followers?  Maybe that tells us something about who we really care about.”  His intent was we need to be involved in the lives of others, especially those who don’t know Christ.  I appreciate his straight forward approach to life!

Continued to have good conversations about prayer with my wife, Cyndi this week.  As she reads The Circle Maker by Mark Batterson, it has opened up new dialogue about prayer and specific prayers we both are praying!  Although we have always had a very good line of communication with each other, this has been a fresh approach to something dear to each of our hearts.  Praying specific prayers together is a good thing!  God will honor them I know!

We spent some time doing yard work this week.  With our frequent commute to Tallahassee each weekend, our yard is sometimes not the first to be attended when we get home each week.  As we were in the front, several cars slowly drove by – looking.  Some drove by more than once.  As we came inside our realtor called to see if someone could show our house in an hour.  Talk about some quick straightening on the inside!  I’m convinced this is going to be the answer to a specific prayer of ours!

Watched a leadership lesson play out this week.  One about delegation and being prepared.  While it turned out not so good, it will still be a good lesson for those involved.  Fortunately it was an issue far down on the list of “importance”.  Sometimes you have to let people fail in order for them to lead – it’s all part of learning!

Easter At The Civic Center is going to be a big deal!  Not for City Church Tallahassee but for God!  I’m excited about the thousands of people who will attend and hear the gospel.  Some for the very first time.  It’s going to take hundreds of volunteers to make this worship event work like it should and I’m thankful for the many people who are stepping up to fill a needed spot.  I can’t wait to write some about the neat things that happen that day!

Tomorrow is my wife’s birthday!  I can’t wait to celebrate it with her!  Part of the celebration will be seeing The Hunger Games.  That will be a treat as the family will be watching together!  We both love the time we get to spend with our kids!  Hoping this year will be one of the best my wife has ever experienced!

170 Hours

Quick post about my week.

Today when I drove into my driveway I had been gone from my house for more than 170 hours.  Seven days and a few hours!  Loved every minute I was away but also secretly wanted to be in my house, watch my tv, sleep in my bed tonight – you get the picture.  Tomorrow morning we pack up and head out again – but for a much shorter time!

I had the opportunity to spend about 40 of those 170 hours with a group of staff and volunteers from City Church Tallahassee as we road tripped to Anderson, South Carolina to participate in Unleash – a one day conference hosted by Perry Noble and Newspring Church.  This was not my first visit to Newspring but I enjoyed it as if it was!  Having an opportunity to worship, listen to some incredible original music by Newspring Worship, hear Perry Noble twice, talk and connect with some people who do community groups with excellence, participate in a breakout with Shane Duffy as he shared about cultural relevance and Biblical truth – all with 34 others from City Church (of yeah and about 3,500 other people!)

Here are two take aways I brought with me:  1.  Numbers do matter because every number is a person.  Every person has a story.  God is interested in our stories.  Numbers do matter.  2.  If you’re going to do something, why not do it with excellence.

I love what is taking place in Tallahassee right now!  Easter at the Civic Center is going to be unbelievable!  All because of Jesus!

One of My Favorite Devotionals – Jesus Calling

A few years ago, one of Cyndi’s friends gave her a devotional – Jesus Calling, Enjoying Peace in His Presence, by Sarah Young.  This gift was given in a time of extreme dispair on our end.  I had just lost my job, didn’t know what to do next, daughter beginning senior year at FSU and son beginning senior year in high school.  That summer was perhaps the most intimate season we’ve had with Jesus and I credit a lot of it to this book.

Here is one of the entries for this week:

“Worship Me in the beauty of holiness.  All true beauty reflects soem of who I am.  I am working My ways in you: the divine Artist creating loveliness within your being.  My main work is to clear out debris and clutter, making room for My Spirit to take full possession.  Collaborate with Me in this effort by being willing to let go of anything I choose to take away.  I know what you need, and I have promised to provide all of that – abundantly!

Your sense of security must not rest in your possessions or in things going your way.  I am training you to depend on Me alone, finding fulfillment in My Presence.  This entails being satisfied with much or with little, accepting either as My will for the moment.  Instead of grasping and controlling, your are learning to release and receive.  Cultivate this receptive stance by trusting Me in every situation.”

Some great words to let sink in.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
