Different View on Saturday

Some friends invited us to kayak with them on Saturday so we spent the day on St. Joe Bay.  Great day exploring around Black’s Island and an even better sunset! Scallops, crabs, conchs and lots of interesting starfish!

We are blessed!

Changing Seasons

We recently hosted our best friends for almost a week here at Mexico Beach.  A number of weeks ago one of them visited for a few days and we were able to share our life now with her.  It’s not perfect but it’s the season of life we’re currently experiencing and enjoying!  Most of our evenings are filled with scenes like this:

Living in a beach town that has year round residents of about 1,000 has it’s benefits!  Of course the population swells beginning in March and will last until September but that’s ok.

For the past 27 months we’ve traveled every weekend or at least a portion of it to Tallahassee, Florida.  First we commuted from Inverness until September 2012.  Then for 7 months we made the commute from Mexico Beach.  That season of our life was spiritually encouraging and fulfilling.  But I’ve got to admit it was physically draining and not to mention the miles in the car and the time in the car.  We calculated at one point that we spent literally a month (yes, one month) of our lives just commuting!

Cyndi and I both feel we were doing exactly what God wanted us to do during that season.  We experienced lots of cool things, met some unbelievable people, led some great discussions, had some life changing conversations and like to think we were used by God in other’s lives as well.

That season has faded away and now we are taking a break.  A time to refresh physically, emotionally and spiritually.  This may be the first time in a very long time we are embracing a season in life like this.  Without going into all the minute details, we know God has blessed us and placed us exactly where He wants us to be once again.  We know He’s going to use us again in some incredible ways!  We’ve learned that it’s not about being a Christian but instead it’s really about being a follower of Christ and that impacts the way we approach life!

In this season, there’s going to be lots of opportunities to see things like this:

And who knows?  Maybe our venture into All Tide Up will continue to take off and will open other opportunities for us.  In the meantime, there will continue to be days like this:

Random Thoughts 11/30

Random thoughts that have consumed me this week:

1. Thankful for a wife who keeps me grounded!

2. Don’t know why I continue to be surprised at God’s timing.  It’s always perfect. Even when I don’t understand it.

3. Amazed that 3 years ago we dreamed of living at Mexico Beach and today it’s a reality.

4. I like listening to The Dixie Chicks. And Fine Young Cannibals.

5. We moved into our new place and still have 3 large storage units of stuff!

6. Glad there are moving companies to haul our stuff up to the third floor – no elevators.

7. When your expectations of your favorite athletic teams aren’t high, you don’t experience frustration when they lose.

8. I miss the homeless friends we fed and hung out with in Hernando. Need to find a way to plug-in here.

9. Grateful for friends willing to take a chance on me employment wise! Will be forever thankful.

10. Excited for one of our biggest opportunities at City Church Tallahassee – Christmas at the Moon!  People will come to this nightclub with their friends when they would never go to church with them.

11. Curious to see how far All Tide Up will go!

12. Encouraged by leaders I’m around every day – people who truely care about other people!

13. Life in the South is just funny sometimes!  People, things, food – all of it – but I don’t know what I would trade it for!

14. The idea of spending less and giving more. And not just giving what’s left over.

Monday 10-22-12

Random thoughts today about the last few days:

1.  I currently live in one of the most beautiful places on earth – Mexico Beach – and most of the people who live here don’t even take advantage of the beauty!

2.  Watching and hearing the stories of life change never gets old!  I love being part of a church that cares about people – City Church Tallahassee is for real!

3.  Michael Mears is one of the most passionate speakers I know.  His message about the gospel and our money was one of the best I have heard.  Proud he is my friend and office mate!

4.  People like Josh and Brandi Hignight are what make organizations succeed.  Josh and Brandi have a three-week old son – Benjamin.  They got up early Sunday and drove to Tallahassee so Josh could fulfill his duties as an usher at church.  Not because he had to but because he wanted to do it.  Love my friends!

5.  My daughter ran not one but two 5K races this weekend.  And she got 3rd place in her age group on Sunday!  A year ago she wasn’t even running and in December she’ll participate in a half marathon.  Proud Dad!

6.  Amazed at the low-level of civility in political discourse today.  In years past I would laugh at news clips from things happening in the British Parliament – we have become just like it in our lack of respect for each other – sad days.

7.  Working to help displaced seafood workers in the Apalachicola Bay area is one of the most intense things I’ve done.  People all over are hurting and just want someone to be an advocate for them.  It’s not going to be an easy solution but hopefully there will be a lasting one in the days ahead.

8.  Thanksgiving and Christmas are exciting times for us.  We try to ramp up our giving to those less fortunate than we are at this time of year.  We won’t have a big Thanksgiving dinner so we can give more to someone who doesn’t have one at all.  We’ll find a way to spend some money and some time with people at Christmas who otherwise wouldn’t have anything.  Kind of feel that’s what Jesus would want us to do.

Who know what the week will bring but I know I’ll be spending some evenings like this:

Entrepreneurial Friends and Family

Excited for some friends and family who are/have become entrepreneurs with their online business recently!  While the economy may still be tanking and “normal” jobs hard to find, it’s amazing to be around some people who have the desire to follow some dreams!  In full disclosure and transparency, I am involved in one of them.  And in a small bit of promotion, I’m listing their sites here:

My good friend Terry Williams has had several online stores but his most recent and most successful is Tobacco Pipes.  He has some great gift items for you to check out!  Terry has his MBA and is a whiz at network administration and stuff like that.  I’m sorry we don’t work together any more – I could learn a ton from him!

Brent Kraus over at Ella Bing is another very talented friend.  Brent worked for me years ago and has since gone on to be an expert in data base languages and scripts and stuff I really know nothing about!  His entry into online businesses is with bow ties!  If you want to know about bow ties, check his site out!

Ryan Hachenberger is a friend and fellow blogger.  You’ve seen and read some of his stuff at Florida Fowler.  He has recently become a freelance writer as well and is developing a yet to be revealed new website!  Whatever it ends up being, I’m sure it will be worth your while!

As my kids began looking at the success of some of these friends and the success of others they know, they brainstormed for a few months about a new venture.  This past week they (we) launched All Tide Up, an online store for t-shirts, croakies, coastal prints, etc.  It’s still in the development stages but it’s live!

Another Random Wednesday

Just some random thoughts and happenings of late:

A dear friend texted me today and asked if I would like to pray for her upcoming trip to Malaysia!  My answer could never be anything other than of course!  Lisa has spent the last few summers traveling to Malaysia and leading a team in sharing the gospel of Jesus through basketball and developing relationships while there.  Here is a pic of Lisa from last year with some of the folks she was with:

Constantly reminded of the good friends we have and the relationships that have been developed over the past few years. Here are a few examples:

1.  Thankful for friends who are still helping me look for full-time employment.  Ryan over at  Florida Fowler is a great friend and has begun writing again.  He has been on the lookout for me even though it might not always be easy!

2.  Thankful for friends who care about our finances.  This past week I had some car trouble – thought it was going to cost me a lot of $$ to get it running.  Josh and Brandi Hignight offered to drive to Inverness on their anniversary weekend so Josh could fix my car.  Unselfish friends wanting to help us.

3.  I’ve shared before about our friend Matthew who has opened up his home to us for a place to stay as needed as we commute each week to Tallahassee.  Having a houseguest each weekend for about 18 months can’t be easy – even if I am the guest!  Trying to give him a break for a month or so during the summer as we stay in our son’s apartment as needed.

Father’s Day was a blast for me.  I always enjoy spending time with Cyndi, Meghan and Ethan.  This past weekend was no exception.  I have the best wife and children a husband and father could ask for!  Meghan even posted a picture of us from many years ago on one of her own blogs, The Life of Mugs!

Reminded this week of the value in investing in others.  You may never know how much impact you can have on those around you!  And the impact others will have on you!

End of The Week Thoughts and Photos

A few random thoughts as Friday nears: (edited post – previous title was way too long!)

We have some great friends!  I won’t go into detail but we love the support friends provide us – both emotionally and physically!

A local pastor wants to talk about a church he is starting in nearby Ocala – this is the second time he has asked me to talk with him about playing a role in its startup and development – I won’t lie, I’m flattered.

Excited about the growth of our community group – six new attendees in the past four weeks!

My wife is amazing – she has not let up in her massage therapy business – despite the travelling we do each week!  It could grow if we were in town more!

FSU men’s basketball has been fun to watch this year – ESPN quote:  FSU has made Tobacco Road its own personal driveway!

This sunset on St. Joe Bay in the Florida panhandle is one of our favorites:

Friday Thoughts

Lots of thoughts running through my mind today and this week that deal with life, leadership and faith!

1.  We listed our house a few months ago and had an offer to purchase it about a week ago.  For a variety of reasons, I think the deal fell apart today – not entirely about price, although we were still several thousand dollars apart.  While I know this is a tough housing market for sellers, I don’t want to just give my house away!  Life can be difficult to understand at times!  Is that bad?

2.  I’ve been reading a lot about high performance teams and what makes them that way.  Every group of people is not a team and certainly can’t be automatically labled as a high performing one!  I’m convinced that Leaders are the deciding factor in allowing teams to understand their mission and purpose and resourcing them to fulfill their roles and meet established goals.  Most times leaders get in the way or simply don’t allow their teams to do what they are capable or accomplishing.

3.  Cyndi and I had a good discussion this morning about our Faith.  Convinced that God has used us over the past 14 months to impact lives, to be a living example for others and to encourage friends.  Our circumstances don’t determine our belief in God or whether or not He is a good and gracious God!  There are good examples of men of faith in the Bible but often times we don’t want to compare our life situations with them – mainly out of fear that our lives could always be worse!  While I still don’t understand this faith journey we are on completely, I do continue to believe that God is in complete control and He knows what is best for us and wants us to be satisfied in Him!  Our wait, while significant to us, pales in comparison to that of others!

Each of these could be blog entries on their own – disappointed that I don’t have time today to do just that.  And I’ll be away from internet activity for a few days, so checking in will be sporadic!

More Random Friday Stuff

Random thoughts about life today – some of these could be blog entries, but I don’t have the time right now!

We have received an offer to buy our house!  This is good but the downside is I don’t really know where we will live when we sell it!  We have options – which is always a great thing!  In fact another set of friends told us this week we could move in with them for a while if we need to/want to/need a change of scenery!  Now if I could only secure that “job”!

Christ followers are not the same as “Christians”.  This explanation will take a long time so I won’t write here but will leave the thought out there that one requires ongoing action while the other somehow has only implied an action.

My wife is amazing!  She has continually worked while being less than 100% since January 2, 2012!  Her massage therapy business can be hard on her physically but she has been determined to work through this.  I am lucky she chose me!

We had two neat desserts this week!  Cyndi made individual apple cobblers one night that were amazing!  Last night we had fresh strawberries with whipped cream on fresh cake!  Again, I am one lucky man!

Looking for work is not as easy as it seems – even with internet job boards.  I would love to find a way to make the job search more meaningful for people and make the search more responsive.

Knowing we won’t be at our next community group meeting has me already feeling a little blue.  I really enjoy the opportunity to experience life with our small group!  Preparing for that group each weed has been a good outlet for me!

What has been on your mind this week?
